Slightly Friends-Only

Posted [sticky post] on 2012.12.23 at 04:08

I write fanfiction for a wide variety of sci-fi and fantasy based fandoms, particularly Stargate SG-1, and sometimes dabble in other fannish pursuits. A detailed breakdown of my specific interests can be found in my profile, while a complete index of my fic lives here, at least in theory. You might also want to check AO3 and/or my last few LJ posts, because sometimes failures to update happen.

Requests to friend or defriend belong on this post. If you're just here for the fic, feel free to just add me without asking, but once things are back to normal (which they will be any second), fic will always appear on my website before it gets mentioned on LJ. I never flock fanfiction, icons, wallpapers, or posts about fandom. I always flock posts that mention my real life, my job, or my family in any way. Anything else is pretty much decided on a whim.

In answer to repeated requests, my fanfiction labeling/warning policy is here This link may also be found in my profile, or to the left of this post, or on the top of my fanfiction index. Please glance over it before reading my fanfic if you are concerned about triggers. If you are interested in it as an example of a warnings policy, keep in mind that it's very specific to my body of work, and made unnecessarily complicated by a couple of atypical fics in my collection. I strongly urge anyone borrowing any part of it to edit it very carefully for their purposes, and not use it to influence what they do and do not write themselves. In my opinion, warnings and labels should be created after the writing process, not before.

01/28/11: I'm having issues with my website and my fic index seems to be missing. I hope to have the problem corrected this weekend. Thank you for your patience.

01/29/11: Holy broken links, Batman. My apologies, but the damage on UTHOF needs to take priority. The fic index will follow, and then I'll get back to addressing individual missing fics. In the meantime, most of my most popular stories can be accessed with the menu on the left hand side of this journal.

Some day in February: I uploaded an old version of the fic index. Bunches of stuff is missing from it, but all the older stuff is there. If you need anything from 1997 - 2008, that's where to look. For more recent stuff, try AO3 or the sidebar of this journal.

Apparently I'm a "Satanic Jezebel" guilty of "spreading lies about the past to undermine the Word of God" because of the "filthy" Star Trek Voyager meta I wrote years ago. Does anyone know where in the Bible I can find the passage on Commander Chakotay's planet of origin?

Apparently someone has fiddled with the script for Yahoo Webrings, causing them to act as redirect scripts. This seems particularly pointless, as it makes it impossible to visit any page in the ring, since visitors just get looped back to the hub page. Also, who uses webrings any more anyway? Are they just trying to remind us they exist? If so, it worked, I remember them now, and I'm off to nuke them.

Sorry to anyone who has tried to load my fic index in the last few days, or however long this has been happening. Arg.

In semi-related news, the IP I had for spiletta.com didn't work consistently. I contacted Prohosting, and they gifted me with a static, dedicated IP. It's if anyone's interested.

ACTA in a Nutshell –

What is ACTA?  ACTA is the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement. A new intellectual property enforcement treaty being negotiated by the United States, the European Community, Switzerland, and Japan, with Australia, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Mexico, Jordan, Morocco, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and Canada recently announcing that they will join in as well.

Why should you care about ACTA? Initial reports indicate that the treaty will have a very broad scope and will involve new tools targeting “Internet distribution and information technology.”

What is the goal of ACTA? Reportedly the goal is to create new legal standards of intellectual property enforcement, as well as increased international cooperation, an example of which would be an increase in information sharing between signatory countries’ law enforcement agencies.

Essential ACTA Resources

  • Read more about ACTA here: ACTA Fact Sheet
  • Read the authentic version of the ACTA text as of 15 April 2011, as finalized by participating countries here: ACTA Finalized Text
  • Follow the history of the treaty’s formation here: ACTA history
  • Read letters from U.S. Senator Ron Wyden wherein he challenges the constitutionality of ACTA: Letter 1 | Letter 2 | Read the Administration’s Response to Wyden’s First Letter here: Response
  • Watch a short informative video on ACTA: ACTA Video
  • Watch a lulzy video on ACTA: Lulzy Video

Say NO to ACTA. It is essential to spread awareness and get the word out on ACTA.

FYI: Spiletta.com will be dark tomorrow

Just FYI my site will be down tomorrow for the PIPA protest. Obviously my fanfic is unlikely to get enough traffic for that to matter much, but my horse racing site gets several hundred visitors a day, which makes it worth it.

Sorry for the inconvenience, but if PIPA passes, I doubt my site will survive long anyway, so better one day dark than a lifetime, right?

Roswell Anyone?

Poll #1810386 Any Roswell Fans Still On My Flist?

Are you a fan of Roswell?

Do you have any interest in Roswell fanfiction?

Only if it features my pairing.
Only if some other thing I'll say in comments

Who do you ship?

something else

Do you want to see the first scene in a long Liz Parker centric wip I keep setting aside?

No, I only read finished fic
No, I'm hoping you write something else instead
No, for any other reason

*psst, non-Roswellians, Hulu is currently streaming the series, as is Amazon Prime. (And probably Netflix, but I don't have that one so you'll have to check yourself.) If you liked Buffy the Vampire Slayer and/or The X-Files, it's worth a try. Buffy meets X-Files is an inaccurate description, but the general flavor is somewhere in between.

What is your must-see holiday movie? One random answer will win a $50 Amazon gift card. [Details here]

I usually just watch holiday episodes of sci-fi shows, followed eventually by Rudolph's Shiny New Year, because that's what Isabel and Kyle watch on the New Years Eve episode of Roswell.

If you've noticed that my website is down again, you're correct. Apparently the domain didn't get renewed in a timely fashion, and now the domain is unavailable. When I have a solution, I'll post it here.

It seems that my web host has rectified the situation without any further effort from me. Whew.

Deleting All Fanworks

Posted on 2011.11.19 at 20:48
Due to the upcoming changes in US copyright law, I will be deleting all of my fanworks. If you want them, back them up now. Due to the unfortunate timing of these bought-and-paid-for government shenanigans, these deletions need to be completed by the end of the day tomorrow.

I deeply regret never finishing my Xanadu trilogy, and many other half-written projects, and I will miss fandom, but such is life when corporations own both the government and human creativity.

Sorry to be melodramatic as I delete my life's work, but I'm deleting my only source of happiness in this life because greedy corporations frakking bought Congress and it frakking sucks, so I feel entitled to a little melodrama. I'm sure I'm not alone in my feelings, as the rest of you will face the same decisions in the coming weeks,at least those of you in the US.

BAD Internet Laws Heading Your Way

Website Blocking

The government can order service providers to block websites for infringing links posted by any users.

Risk of Jail for Ordinary Users

It becomes a felony with a potential 5 year sentence to stream a copyrighted work that would cost more than $2,500 to license, even if you are a totally noncommercial user, e.g. singing a pop song on Facebook.

Chaos for the Internet

Thousands of sites that are legal under the DMCA would face new legal threats. People trying to keep the internet more secure wouldn't be able to rely on the integrity of the DNS system.

Read this analysis from boing-boing.net

Get on the phone and call your representative. Express your disapproval. Tell him or her exactly how you feel, and that you don't support this. Tell your friends to call their representatives, their Congressperson, and complain. Mention that you are a registered voter that takes your civic responsibility seriously and that you will use that vote to express your feelings about this.

“We support the bill’s stated goals — providing additional enforcement tools to combat foreign ‘rogue’ websites that are dedicated to copyright infringement or counterfeiting,” the Internet companies wrote in Tuesday’s letter. “Unfortunately, the bills as drafted would expose law-abiding U.S. Internet and technology companies to new uncertain liabilities, private rights of action and technology mandates that would require monitoring of websites.”  The chamber-led coalition in support of the bill includes Walmart, Eli Lilly & Co. and Netflix.

Google and other opponents of the legislation argue that restricting the Internet in the U.S. sets a bad international precedent and that the language defines infringing too broadly.

Note: If this law passes, I will immediately nuke all of my fanworks. I'm not going to prison for a hobby I don't even get to enjoy any more.

Regarding Irene

Posted on 2011.08.27 at 19:44
Current Mood: calmcalm
I'm way, way inland of the storm. I'm hundreds of miles from the edge of the path. We're not even predicted to see any rain from the event. Last I looked, we had a 30% chance of scattered showers.

However, our power in this particular neighborhood does go out at every slight opportunity, including in the middle of crystal clear weather for no adequately explained reason, like last Friday night, or due to excessively partying neighbors, like on a couple of Saturdays earlier this summer. Therefore, I'm posting this now just in case I'm missing for days and anyone thinks to worry.

Should I lose power for an extended time, I'll be forced to relocate on Monday for work. Deadlines don't change just because of, well, anything really. In the meantime, I charged my mp3 player, charged my nook, and have three fully charged laptops and a really good flashlight. This is pretty much the extent of my disaster preparedness, seeing as it's summer and it would take an actual apocalypse to flood me out -- I'm too lazy to do the math, but the "river" near me would have to grow to pretty epic proportions to reach this hill. Only willful human intervention is capable of flooding this house, and the time that happened, water pouring directly onto the carpet from a garden hose for several hours only managed to destroy an outdated book of football statistics and some copy paper.

In summary: I might disappear at some point tonight, but it won't have anything to do with Irene, or flooding, or anything at all serious.

I just got TOS'ed from an online game thingy for being underage, because apparently I'm twelve. What the frak? The paint stain on the shirt I'm wearing is older than twelve. (Hmm, maybe I do need some new clothes.)

Anyway, just in case anyone is wondering, I am definitely, positively, over the age of eighteen, which I shouldn't have to work too hard to prove, seeing as I have fic dating back to 1997.
